As the title hints, Generic Slash: Dismal Depths is a simple action-RPG with a battle system much like the one found in Square's Mana series. Hack at enemies to make them yield riches, then grab it to barter for more HP when standing on tiles with a yellow swirling symbol.

Thanks for the up, Tim!

Please note that to run this game you'll need to install the Microsoft .NET 2.0 framework and the SDL.NET installer included with the game.

The game was made in 26 straight hours for the 3DP competition so it's very rough around the edges :)

You had me at mana series.

SDL.NET? What nonsense is that? O_O

Anyways, downloaded this the moment I saw the screenshot :D Made me think it was a Roguelike with decent graphics and Zelda-like gameplay. Let's see how well it meets up those expectations.

Don't expect much!

How do you barter for HP on the swirling yellow circle?

Just stand on it. If you need health then you will pay for it automatically. The further down the dungeon you go, the more expensive it gets.

Haowan: I'm afraid you're right not to expect too much of it. I tried the game, but it crashed before it started. Just got the game's Windows frame, then it crashed. I installed the SDL.NET framework and, just to make sure I had it, .NET 3.0. Still gave that crash.

Hmm, don't know then dude - try reinstalling the SDL.NET framework after having installed the .NET 2.0 framework?

It's a real bummer though, sorry if you can't get it to work :(

Still nothing. In the command prompt, it says it can't use SDL_image.dll. Aside from that, my comp's now crapping itself. I tried rebooting again, but still craps itself >_<

Oooh, dear. I don't want to be responsible for computer death >_<

What are your specs?
Blogger haowan said at 8/14/2007 10:18:00 AM:
Actually if you just want to email me then we can do this by email.

I wouldn't go as far as computer death. Just got to have a look at a few things, or it might be that it was setting some settings after the reboots or so. If things are needed, I can still reinstall everything from scratch. Did that recently, so not a big loss, except in time ;) Anyways, let's continue this bug thing through email. Will keep this site clean of further off-topicness

This is pretty good for 26 hours work.
Graphics are nice and chunky and it's got a good bit of gameplay for a slash-em-up :)

Its a simple game, nice if you like diablo like games.

The biggest problem with the game is variety. I walked down to depth 50.. and the last 20 rooms are just the same red goblin thingies over and over again. Maybe if you gain levels or whatever then other enemies show up but like this its boring.
