Well, not the ugliest, but surely has his way to the top....
Anonymous Anonymous said at 7/25/2007 07:36:00 AM:
I dunno. Seen a lot worse. Most abstract shooters...

Theres something about the ships firepower there I like.

Kind of cool, ugly, but cool ;D

Ugly in the sense that an Aphex Twin track isn't a beautiful violin concerto... they were clearly going for "crazy-ass digital noise" aesthetic and I think it looks cool.

Not that impressive, but personally I don't think we should make entries just to make fun of particular games, since it might come off as discouraging the person to make more games.

Paul, Tim's not making fun of anyone. Cactus himself described it as the ugliest shmup ever. I agree with your sentiment, everyone should be encouraged, but this is just friendly joking amongst some friends.

i actually quite like it. what is the game?
the waves look like they could be a bit more intelligent than just spinning round tho'

The post was made by Cactus, not Tim. But, I agree -- I'm not saying it's a bad thing to make fun of games. It's definitely appropriate between friends or on forums or whatever. I've made fun of hundreds of games to people in my life.

It's just that, thousands of people read this. I've told people directly that their graphics suck, but I wouldn't go around telling thousands of people that, holding them up as an object of ridicule.

I don't have a huge problem with it and don't want to make it an issue or anything, I was basically saying I think that anyone who makes a game should be applauded, regardless of how ugly it looks. Maybe it's his first game. My first game was far uglier.

I made the game ;)

Haha, I was thinking that might be possible after I wrote that last comment. After I watched the video again it seemed like your style of game too. Never mind then.

Offtopic: I am new to roguelikes and want to know if Dwarf Fortress is not too hard to start ???
Blogger Unknown said at 7/25/2007 09:35:00 AM:
Am I the only one to think that the game looks gorgeous ? I mean, ok, it's very "kitch", but it's great like this and gives it a unique style :)

I'd love to play it.

Genius. The amen break has never been so appropriate.

It will take a couple of goes to get the idea behind Dwarf Fortress. Also check out the Wiki (here) and read the article "surviving your first winter".

As for this post... as graham says, a bit of joking between friends is ok, but as paul says it does give a bad example (one I often reproduce myself, sadly). Personally I don't even think it's a particularly ugly game, but it looks far too easy :)

I think it looks pretty cool. In a way it reminds me of an Atari 2600 game, modernized. Dig it!
Anonymous Anonymous said at 7/25/2007 09:53:00 AM:
actually it's way better looking than the Rick Dangerous rehash you introduced a few articles ago...

I actually like it! The way the "stuff" blasts out of the player ship looks cool to me. It's unique, I guess that's why I like it.
Blogger ゲッソー said at 7/25/2007 11:33:00 AM:
I think its abstract rather than "Ugly".
Blogger K. Thor Jensen said at 7/25/2007 11:51:00 AM:
Actually, I rather like the look of this. It's abstract but instead of the clean, infographic look of most abstract shooters it's sloppy and messy.
Anonymous Anonymous said at 7/25/2007 01:10:00 PM:
Mmm... not ugly. In fact, it has a 'trash' look that is cool. I like it. I like it much. In fact, I want to play it. Link?
Anonymous Anonymous said at 7/25/2007 01:28:00 PM:
Looks wonderful!
Anonymous Anonymous said at 7/25/2007 02:20:00 PM:
I've made far uglier games. They were also seriously lacking in the effects\animation department compared to this game. At least it isn't visually boring.
Anonymous Anonymous said at 7/25/2007 02:48:00 PM:
I like the look of this game,I think it has potential, reminds me of the old effects of Jeff Minter games, like Llamatron on the Amiga. Possibly needs something interesting at the background like a wireframe grid.

Its nice to see an abstract shoot 'em up done in another style other than homage'ing Kenta Cho!

Okay... what the HELL is THAT supposed to be?
